The 1st Huawei SP/CP/ISP Collaboration Forum in ShenZhen

One of the objectives of HKWDC is bridging the gap of collaboration between industry players in Hong Kong, Mainland China and overseas to promote the local wireless and mobile development. HKWDC has signed at least six MOUs in the past nine months to set up collaboration with several local and overseas wireless entities and laboratories such as NewT and Contec Innovation in Canada, Insignia in US, m.Net in Australia, ETI – HKU and Telewide in Hong Kong etc…

To facilitate the communication between Hong Kong and China, HKWDC has established the strategy partnership with Value-added Service Committee - China Association of Communication Enterprises (VASC) starting Mar 2004. We have jointly organized wide array of business campaigns such as business matching dinner, professional VAS training, VASC 2004 Conference in the past few months to enable a platform for local and Chinese wireless and mobile industry players to update the industry trends; technology as well as share experiences and foster partnership across boundaries.

In order to enlarge the coverage, HKWDC is establishing a strategy alliance with Huawei Technology Company Limited, one of the largest telecom and IT infrastructure providers in Asia Pacific, not limited to China. HKWDC will leverage networking strength of both parties to conglomerate professionals of wireless and mobile application development for creating more innovative solutions and penetrating new markets in Hong Kong and China.

The first collaboration is initiated by the 1st Huawei SP/CP/ISP Collaboration Forum and details are as follow:

Invitation to attend the briefing session of the RFP on wireless and mobile applications in The Cyberport 3G Community Project

Appointed by OGCIO of HKSAR, Hong Kong Wireless Technology Industry Association (WTIA) will initiate a Cyberport 3G Community Project to assist government to promote the wireless and mobile application development, especially on 3G and boost up the data usage in general public. An awarded scheme has been generated to encourage innovative and newly created 3G applications. For the project details, please visit www.hkwtia.org/wtia/index.htm.

The 1st batch applications implemented at Cyberport will be awarded through submission of RFP by industry players and HKWDC is designated by WTIA as the operating arm of the project. A RFP will be released in the week of 18 Nov to invite talents submitting their proposal. Moreover, HKWDC and WTIA will conduct a briefing session in the morning at 19 Nov 04 to summarize the project requirements and answer the FAQ. In order to promote the awareness and adoption of mobile data services in Hong Kong , there is a star-studded roving show from July to Dec 04 taken place at Residential Area and Commercial Plazas organized by ITSD and Hong Kong Computer Society. HKWDC aims as industry promoter in the awareness, usage and development of local wireless and mobile applications, has been invited to participate in Roving Show.

The Roving Show is the best opportunity on brand building as well as launching of your services to public and government officials. It also aligns with the purpose of technology education to enlarge the recognition on mobile data and entertainment services in general public. The emerging of recognition will generate a huge increase in the needs of mobile data services which generate potential businesses in industry.

HKWDC Participation in Co-organized m-Government Symposium

For the establishment of HKWDC, it is mandated to increase the awareness, usage and development of wireless and mobile applications in all rounds. On 29 – 30 Jun, HKWDC will jointly organize with ITSD on m-government Symposium at HKCEC. HKWDC will introduce their objectives, roles and facilities to the corresponding government bureaus and departments in Symposium. Selected industry players in wide-spectrum areas will present the latest wireless and mobile technology and applications in Conference and Exhibition to address the needs of corresponding departments.

At the booth of HKWDC, our strategy partner ETI of HKU will also demonstrate their messaging platform installed in Centre to provide member ' s applications developed on top of it.

Upon the successful 1st run in Beijing in Apr 2004, around 60 attendants from diverse backgrounds (38% from operators such as CMC, CTG, CUG, CNC and CRC, 30% from value-added services provisioning, 15% from mobile devices manufacturing and the remaining 17% from system integration) participated in the course. HKWDC has given recommendation on course structure and secured a 15% discount on course fees for our privileged members: the cost of HK$3,825 (originally HK$4,500) includes administration cost, notes, certification and lunch.

Invitation to attend the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Seminar jointly organized by HKPC and HKWDC


Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) first appeared in tracking and access applications during the 1980s. This wireless system allows non-contact reading and is effective in manufacturing and other environments where bar code labels are not easily accessible. Major overseas chain stores and buyers such as Walmart are driving the use of RFID technology by mandating the use of standardized RFID on goods delivered from their suppliers, some as early as 2005. It believes that RFID technology will re-engineer the workflow in many industries and operate tremendous business opportunities in the IT industry. To strengthen the knowledge of RFID and its implications in the future, a RFID Forum will be organized and all of you are invited to attend in free of charge.

Thematic Seminar on “Exploring Wireless Business Opportunity with the Government”


HKWDC is always dedicated to promote the adoption of wireless applications in Hong Kong. In 2004, HKWDC will hold a series of thematic seminars to facilitate communication in technology and market news amongst all industry players in a regular basis.

As a starting point, we are planning to hold a seminar to target Government sector to familiar on the mechanism to access procurement information of HKSAR and the direction of IT planning of HKSAR in Year 2004. HKWDC members are in first priority to attend the Seminar in free of charge to explore wireless business opportunity with the Government

Radio Promotion of Hong Kong Wireless Development Centre on Commercial Radio Supported by ITSD (2 – 28 Feb, 04)

To echo the support of Government on Hong Kong Wireless Development Centre to promote the awareness, development and usage of wireless technology and applications to enterprises as well as public, HKWDC will broadcast its objectives, facilities and services, members benefits and centre activities in the airtime of “IT” sponsored by ITSD in Commercial Radio. It also presents the latest direction of HKWDC. The 1 min message will be released from 2 Feb to 28 Feb three times per day. The theme will be refreshed weekly to guide the audiences step by step on HKWDC and its benefits. HKWDC will also have on-going programs delivered to industry players, corporate end-users and general public by different means. Please stay tuned with the HKWDC radio broadcast.

Print Media Visit to HKWDC


More than 10 print media took a visit to HKWDC on 19 Feb 2004 escorted by ITSD. The media presents a strong interest on direction, objectives as well as facilities provided in HKWDC, especially on a unique multi-operator and multi-vendor IT and mobile network connectivity platform and the latest handheld devices for application development, testing, trial run and deployment. Mr Stephen Lai, our centre director illustrated the roadmap, benefits and facilities provided in HKWDC and had been interviewed by print media.

CWTA/WTIA/HKWDC/OEI/HKTDC Virtual IT Trade Mission to Extend Regional Collaboration (18 Feb, 04)

WTIA and Canada Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) will jointly organize the Virtual IT Trade Mission (VTM) on 18 Feb 04 to move forward the collaboration and mutual co-operation on MOU signed at HK II Expo 2002. The VTM is the ideal platform for companies in Hong Kong and Canada to exchange ideas on wireless technology, market trends and explore possible partnership opportunities in the respective markets of each other in the mode of Video Conferencing.

In order to strengthen the collaboration across boundary for wireless and digital content industry players, TRLabs/NEWT of Canada - a Canada’s largest research consortium in information and communications technology which operates five laboratories in Western Canada where university professors, graduate students, industrial partners and staff researchers work together to deploy its facilities, has collaborated with HKSAR, Cyberport and WTIA for exchange the best practices in ICT of Wireless and Digital Content Technologies in MOUs Signing Ceremony on 19 Jan 2004.

We are honor to have Mr John Tsang, Secretary of Commerce, Industry and Technology, HKSAR, Mr Anthony Burger, Consul General of Canada and Mr Ralph Klein, Premier of the Province Alberta, Canada as Guests of Honour witnessing the signing of the MOUs

Opening of Hong Kong Wireless Development Centre

To celebrate the establishment of Hong Kong Wireless Development Centre (HKWDC), Hong Kong Wireless Technology Industry Association (WTIA) will organize the “Opening Ceremony” on 15 Dec 2003 to launch the directions, infrastructure facilities and services to all parties in the wireless industry.

We are honor to have Mr. John Tsang, Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology Bureau (CITB), Mr. John Strickland, Chairman, Board of Directors, Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited and Mr. Duncan Lau, Chairman, Hong Kong Wireless Technology Industry Association (WTIA) as our Officiating Guests to make speech in the ceremony.

Besides, 15 application developers and 20 sponsors will display their products, applications and technology in opening ceremony. We target to have more than 300 audiences from government officials, mobile network operators, handheld devices manufacturers, content providers, application developers, academic institutions, IT companies and associations, Cyberport tenants, press media etc.
