16 Applications Submitted in the First RFP on Wireless and Mobile Applications for The Cyberport 3G Community Project
RFP for mobile application implemented in Cyberport 3G Project has been released to wireless and mobile developers on 15 Oct 2004 and a briefing session with over 30 interested companies have been conducted in Cyberport for detail explanation on project. Tender will be closed at 25 Oct 2004. WTIA got the overwhelming response with 16 applications in the requested areas of “3G Mobile Carpark”, “Cyberport 3G Portal” and “Cyberport 3G LED” at closing date. The evaluation team will release the awarded companies in early Nov 2004.
16 Members Companies and HKWDC Participated into 1 st Huawei SP/CP/ISP Collaboration Forum in ShenZhen
31 industry representatives from 16 member companies and HKWDC have participated into 2-day collaboration forum and discussion panels with over 50 Chinese companies in SP, CP and ISP nature in Huawei Technologies Company Limited at 20 – 21 Oct 04. This is the first business matching activity jointly organized by Huawei Technologies and HKWDC to breakthrough the communication gap between SP/CP/ISP of Hong Kong and China . Through the arrangement of HKWDC, local wireless and mobile developers have a communication platform to p romote interactive exchange and cooperation among companies. It has also fostered the partnership between local SP/CP/ISP and Huawei. In the business perspective, there is a great potential on business deals for HK developers since Huawei released the details of planned projects in the coming year of 2005. 4 out of 16 local companies have presented their solutions to senior management of Huawei and SP/CP/ISP in China .
Overwhelming Response in New Approach of Thematic Seminar Targeting Retail Industry
Over 70 attendants, half of them are end-users from Retail Industry had shown up in Thematic Seminar at 19 Oct 04 held by HKWDC, HKPC and RTIA. The seminar highlighted how mobile technologies and applications specialized for merchants to re-engineer their marketing strategy; promote their products and services to target customers. Beside the presentations from solution providers such as Lobo Limited and AsiaPay (Hong Kong) Limited, we are honored to invite chairman of Hong Kong Retail Technology Industry Association and CEO of Cheong Hing Store Limited as representatives from Retail Industry to share their experiences on adopting wireless and mobile technologies in their environment.

HKWDC Promotes the Awareness and Usage of Wireless and Mobile Development in the “IT Roving Show 2004” Organized by HKCS and OGCIO of HKSAR (3rd Round at 11- 12 Sept 04, 4th Round at 25 – 26 Sept 04)
HKWDC and its members (Brightex Technology Limited, Lobo Limited, CityCom Technology Limited) had been invited by OGCIO of HKSAR to participate in the “IT Roving Show 2004” taken place at Public Estate. The 3rd and 4th round had been exhibited successfully in 11 – 12 and 25 – 26 Sept 04 at Tin Shui Wai and Tze Wan Shan respectively)
More than 1000 guests circulated in the booths of HKWDC to visualize the means and benefits by adoption of the latest wireless technologies and services in their daily live. The booth of HKWDC had demonstrations on mobile email, messaging and mobile multi-media monitoring system as well as interactive games special designed for mass market to attract uncountable audiences.
3 Aug Full House in Thematic Seminar - Integrate the Enterprise with Mobile & Wireless Applications
Over 60 attendants had shown up in Thematic Seminar on 3 Aug 04 held by HKWDC and HKPC. The seminar highlighted how companies and industries could utilize wireless technologies, especially on the areas of ¡§Mobile Email¡¨, ¡§Mobile Messaging¡¨ and ¡§Mobile Workforce¡¨ to drive down costs, increase revenue and improve customer satisfaction. The integration methodology of wireless and mobile into existing IT platform had also been discussed in seminar.

Overwhelming Response to June’s Thematic Seminar “2004 Vendor Updates on Wireless and Mobile Technology and Development Tools”
June’s Thematic Seminar was successfully organized by HKWDC and HKPC on 30 Jun 2004 . Major IT vendors presented the latest technologies, development platform and plug-in modules for the needs of wireless and mobile applications development. We were honored to have the following speakers:

HKWDC Supporting in m-Government Symposium at HKCEC
HKWDC promoted its objectives, roles and facilities to various government bureaux and departments in jointly organizing the m-Government Symposium at HKCEC on 29 – 30 Jun. 20 vendors and wireless developers exhibited their core applications to government audiences to illustrate how to adopt wireless and mobile technologies in daily operation and increasing customer services. More than 300 attended the Symposium.
Mr. Alan Wong of HKSAR and Mr. Stephen Lai of HKWDC delivered the welcome and opening speeches. Besides, our Technical Director, Mr. KW Au gave a presentation on the topic of “User Perspectives of Wireless and Mobile Technologies”.

Overwhelming Response and Participation of HKWDC Members in the Professional VAS Training in ShenZhen
Around 60 attendants from China Mobile, China Unicom, Services Providers (SP) and VAS Developers in difference provinces of Mainland China grouped together for the 2 nd Telecom VAS Professional Training in ShenZhen on 3-4 June 2004. HKWDC was a co-organizer of this training course. Amongst the participants include 6 representatives from 3 HKWDC member companies, namely iNFOiSLIVE, Lobo and Swiftpath. They all found this training course rewarding to them.
The training was designed for representatives from the Mainland Chinese Government, operators, educational institutes and VAS providers to share experience on VAS development in Mainland China and Hong Kong . It was also an immeasurable opportunity for business matching across the border.

Moreover, HKWDC members were invited to share experience and foster partnerships in the business matching dinner with mobile and wireless industry players from Mainland China .

attention on HKWDC and the development of the wireless industry.
In meanwhile, ITSD and HKWDC representatives had escorted
more than 10 media visiting the booths of
our member companies. The media showed a great interest on
their mobile applications and many of our members had been
interviewed instantly to gain a media exposure.
Mr Stephen Lai, the centre director of HKWDC had been invited
to deliver a speech in Thematic Seminar - “Wireless
Enterprises – Making it Real for Business Efficiency”
in the morning on 15 April 2004. His topic was “Tapping
on Wireless for Business Efficiency and Competitiveness –
Hong Kong Case Studies” to share the experiences and
address the impacts on adoption of wireless technology and
applications in Hong Kong companies.
It was star-stubbed in pavilion and all visitors had a great
enjoyment in the tour and refreshment on knowledge and news
in wireless and mobile technologies and applications

Experience and Knowledge Sharing with Telecom Delegates from Mainland China
20 representatives of Telecom companies from Mainland China had attended the TIF Conference on 25 Mar 2004 by invitation of HKWDC. As an active facilitator to promote the local wireless and mobile applications to Asia Pacific region, HKWDC organized a dinner gathering at Lamma Island on the night of 25 Mar 2004. More than 10 member companies had been introduced by Centre to 20 China delegates. Moreover, several pairs of partners had been fostered in the gathering. It was also a great opportunity to share the critical and successful factors in establishing value-added services in Mainland China.
In the morning of 26 Mar 2004, HKWDC and the Value-added Services Committee, China Association of Communication Enterprises jointly organized a Conference in HKPC to roll out the industry trend and needs, business model of value-added Services provided in Mainland China. Each China delegate presented their company profile and business strengths. HKWDC also presented the collaboration model with Value-added Services Committee as well as the roles of the Centre in bridging the gap of development on wireless and mobile applications and services between Hong Kong and Mainland China.
More than 50 senior management officers participated in the Conference and some of them had partnered to develop regional projects on value-added services.
Overwhelming Response on “TELECOMS INFOTECHNOLOGY
FORUM” at Mandarin Oriental Hotel
Over 250 local and overseas guests attended the TIF Conference
organized by the Telecommunications Research Project of the
University of Hong Kong (TRP) and the Hong Kong Wireless Development
Centre (HKWDC) on 25 Mar 2004 at Mandarin Oriental Hotel.
The Conference pinpointed the position, value and benefits of
Hong Kong becoming the Asia Pacific Wireless Development Centre.
It brought together local and overseas vendors, service providers
and developers to share their views, experiences, modeling,
recommendations and contribution, on how to realize the goal
of HK becoming Asia’s wireless development centre. In
the Conference were also highlighted the directions, latest
news and collaboration between local and overseas wireless industry
players helping to explore business opportunity.
We had honor to have Mr. John Tsang, Secretary for CITB to deliver
welcoming remarks for the TIF Conference. The Conference was

Recognizing the promotional value of our Centre, more developers
have submitted new wireless and mobile applications to be
displayed in our kiosks, to promote their products and services
to local and overseas visitors. New applications include:

Achievements on RFID Conference Jointly Organized by HKPC
and HKWDC
Apart from the RFID Conference held on 18 Mar 2004, HKWDC
has signed a MOU with IBM to set up a trial RFID platform
in our Development Suites. We are discussing the testing model
and system requirements to provide the best stimulation environment
for our members to develop, integrate and test newly developed
RFID applications. We will update the progress to all of you
very soon. Interested parties, you can contact Mr. Michael
Chan for further collaboration.
Thematic Seminar on “Exploring Wireless Business
Opportunity with the Government”
In 2004, we assisted our members to explore business opportunities
in Government sector as well as familiar on the mechanism
to access procurement information of HKSAR and the direction
of IT planning of HKSAR in Year 2004. Hong Kong Wireless Development
Centre (HKWDC) held a thematic seminar with ITSD of HKSAR
on 27 Feb 2004 at ITSC Technology Centre at Cyberport.
Nearly 100 audiences from IT and wireless professionals had
attended the seminar. The audiences had presented their opinions
on existing mechanism and raised out many enquiries to government
IT direction.

as public, HKWDC will broadcast its objectives, facilities
and services, members benefits and centre activities in the
airtime of “IT” sponsored by ITSD in Commercial
Radio. It also presents the latest direction of HKWDC. The
1 min message will be released from 2 Feb to 28 Feb three
times per day. The theme will be refreshed weekly to guide
the audiences step by step on HKWDC and its benefits. HKWDC
will also have on-going programs delivered to industry players,
corporate end-users and general public by different means.

Visit by Government ITMUs
HKWDC and its members had been invited by ITSD of HKSAR to
demonstrate the latest mobile applications to corresponding
government departments in align with its direction to conduct
feasibility study and sourcing market solutions on adoption
of wireless and mobile technology in government sector. 7
selected members illustrated their strengths through demonstration
in areas of:
- Messaging Solution such as SMS, MMS, email, fax and multi-media
interaction
- Location-based Solution
- Security Solution
Several of them had been requested for further discussion
on specific requirements by several departments. We believe
that projects will be evaluated and implemented very soon.
Print Media Visit to HKWDC
As a facilitator to promote and increase the exposure of local
wireless and mobile applications, ITSD and HKWDC arranged
a media visit with interview opportunities to HKWDC and the
wireless and mobile applications of our members. The media
presented a strong interest on direction, objectives as well
as facilities provided in HKWDC including mobile network connectivity
platform, the latest handheld devices for application development,
testing, trial run and deployment and display kiosks for promotion
of applications. Mr Stephen Lai, our centre director illustrated
the roadmap, benefits and facilities provided in HKWDC.
Apart from this, HKWDC members had been invited to demonstrate
their applications and interviewed on its usage of facilities
as well as comments and expectation on HKWDC.

Management Company Limited and Hong Kong Productivity Council,
and key industry players such as MNOs, MVNOs, handheld device
manufacturers, hardware and software vendors, content providers,
wireless applications developers and system integrators, we
have a successful opening with on your contribution and participation
on 15 Dec 2003 at Cyberport.
It is great to have Mr. John Tsang, Secretary for Commerce,
Industry and Technology Bureau (CITB), Mr. John Strickland,
Chairman, Board of Directors, Hong Kong Cyberport Management
